Who We Are

The Edward’s Lake church is an assembly of Christians who have joined hearts and hands to work and Familyworship together in serving the Lord. We have accepted the call of Christ to discipleship (2 Thessalonians 2:13-14), and have turned from our previous lives of self-service to new lives of service to Christ our King. For each of us, this new life began when we believed in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God (John 8:24), repented of our selfish and sinful ways (Acts 3:19), confessed Christ as our Lord (Romans 10:9-10), and were baptized in water for the forgiveness of our sins (Acts 2:38). As a result, we were cleansed from the guilt of our sins, and we continue to be cleansed by Christ’s blood as we continue to follow Him (1 John 1:6-9).

As a congregation of the Lord’s people, we strive to “encourage one another to love and good works...” (Hebrews 10:24-25). Our fellowship in this church is not contingent upon total agreement on every Bible question, but rather on our willingness to submit to the Bible’s teaching as we come to understand it. In this growth process, we recognize that there will be differences in interpretation and understanding, because of human weakness and different levels of spiritual maturity. However, we are committed to an ongoing effort to attain a complete unity of understanding and practice. Therefore, to respect the consciences of all, we as a group only engage in activities which we can agree are consistent with the Bible’s teaching. This does not limit our individual freedom to serve God in other ways, but serves as a means for the unity of this assembly (Romans 14:1-8; Ephesians 4:1-6).

We do not claim to be perfect, nor do we pretend to have all the answers; but we do believe that God’s word has the answers. It is our aim to glorify God by exalting Christ in our lives and by teaching others as we humbly try to serve Him.

Since Christ “is head over all things to the church” (Ephesians 1:22-23), He rules over every aspect of our lives. Because He is our only Head, Lord, and King, we seek to exalt Him by wearing only His name, preaching only His word, following only His teaching, doing only that which He authorizes, and making Him the center of our affection and adoration.

Since Jesus said the “seed is the word of the kingdom” (Luke 8:11) and since one of God’s immutable laws is that seed always reproduces after its own kind (Genesis 1:11-12), we are convinced that simple, pure New Testament Christianity can be restored and practiced in our own day and age. If we plant the same “seed” that was planted by Jesus and the apostles, following the New Testament alone, we can reproduce the same simple New Testament Christianity we read about in scripture.

Since the Bible is God’s inspired word (2 Timothy 3:16-17) and it provides all things that pertain to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3), we accept the Bible as our only standard and try to follow it as our guide in everything. We place great importance on Bible study. Our’s is  an environment in which you and your family can truly learn and grow.

Since God condemns any alteration of His word (Galatians 1:6-9; 2 John 9-11), it is our sincere aim to teach what the Bible teaches, and not to go beyond that with doctrines of our own (1 Corinthians 4:6). Our stated purpose is to magnify God by edifying and equipping ourselves for discipleship and evangelism through worship and Bible study. We are convinced that we can be free from the problems of sin, self, ignorance, and error only when we live under the authority of Jesus’ word, which is comprised of the New Testament scriptures (Colossians 3:16).

Since Jesus condemned division (1 Corinthians 1:10-13) and every church in New Testament times was independent and autonomous [self-governing], we are not a part of any man-made denomination. We intend to have no denominational name, creed, headquarters, or oversight. We are completely independent of other churches, but we desire a unity of faith with all those everywhere who “walk in the light as He is in the light” (1 John 1:7).

FamilySince Jesus’ mission while on earth was to “seek and save the lost” (Luke 19:10), that is our primary mission as a congregation belonging to Jesus Christ. We are convinced that the church’s purpose is to help people get to heaven rather than to provide for their social and recreational needs. We believe in the power of the gospel to draw men to Christ (Romans 1:16-17), and we appeal to lost souls with nothing other than God’s word.

Jesus said that God is seeking those who will worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:23-24). Our goal is to model our worship after the New Testament pattern. In our worship assemblies, we pray to God (Acts 12:5), sing praise (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16), listen to sermons from God’s word (Acts 20:7), remember Christ’s death by eating the Lord’s Supper on the first day of the week (1 Corinthians 11:24-26), and contribute a portion of our material prosperity to support the Lord’s work (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). However, you should rest assured that we never solicit money from visitors! In all things we try to maintain the proper reverence and decorum appropriate to honoring God.

If your goals and interests are the same as ours, we hope you will become more than just a guest. Come worship with us!

Sunflower FieldThere are big churches and little churches. Some have elders; some don't. Some support missionaries abroad; some don't. Some support a local evangelist; some support multiple evangelists; some don't have the funds to support a man in a full-time work. Some churches share in the Lord's Supper at the beginning of their services, some at the end, some in the middle. Some churches offer the Lord's Supper on Sunday evening to those who weren't in the morning service. Some churches don't even meet in the morning - only in the afternoon. Some churches have paid-for property; some churches meet in a rented fac Read More »

As we cross the threshold of another year and step into 2009, many feel in their hearts a desire for something new. Much like Spring cleaning, we want to unload the weights which we dragged behind us in 2008 so we can run with a lighter step.

A New Day DawnsPerhaps one reason for this desire is a feeling of despair. What did we actually accomplish in 2008? Did we meet last year's goals? This year could be different. Did we pray, study, and work the way we ought last year? Did we load ourselves up with too many projects? Did we miss the main point of life? Are we happy about last year?

Crucifixion1 Corinthians 1:22-25
 22 For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom;
23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness,
24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than me Read More »

Standing StrongI found these words in the introduction to 1 Corinthians:

4 I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus,
5 that in everything you were enriched in Him, in all speech and all knowledge,
6 even as the testimony concerning Christ was confirmed in you,
7 so that you are not lacking in any gift, awaiting eagerly the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

<WARNING...The following message may shock a great percentage of the World's population.>

Study TruthI was listening to the Dominick Brascia show here in Birmingham, AL, the other day. He had a guest (a lady, "Reverend" somebody). A caller asked her about her faith. She told him this was HER path to salvation. She didn't want to bind HER path on anyone else. She wanted everyone to find his own path - whatever works for you. And she calls herself a Christian. And she calls herself a leader of God's people. What kind of God does Read More »

"The LSheep herdord is my shepherd, I shall not want." This is the first verse of Psalm 23, a psalm many learn by heart as children. Unfortunately, shepherding is not common among the people with whom I associate. David was a shepherd for much of his youth. He saved his flock from lions and bears (1 Samuel 17:34-36). He was a good shepherd, a protector of his sheep. I wonder what emotions and pictures went through David's mind as he penned those words: "The Lord is my shepherd"?

2 He makes me like down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters

The Jewish Nostradamus, diviner aProphecynd dabbler in the occult, left reams of prophecy through which future generations, even our own, has sifted. The claim is made that he predicted the assassination of the Kennedy brothers, JFK and RFK. He successfully predicted the appointment of a future pope, who was appointed after Nostradamus' death. He is claimed to have predicted the rise of Hitler. However, as one of his followers writes, "I can dismiss ninety-five per cent of Nostradamus’ predictions as historical coincidence" (referenced site). Ninety-five per cent is a pretty b Read More »

In Zicholera in Zimbabwembabwe an epidemic of cholera sweeps the nation, even as I write this message. President (Dictator) Robert Mugabe is trying to say there is no need for panic - everything is under control. Other countries, including our own, have stated the spread of cholera is a direct result of Mugabe's government. They have demanded he step down. Mugabe replied, "Now there is no cholera, there is no need for war. We need doctors, not soldiers." Here is an examp Read More »

Why do you believe in God?
Fire in the Sky

  • "My parents taught me to believe in God. You can't tell me there's no God."
  • "Well, things just seem to go better for me when I go to church...and everyone there believes in God...so there must be a God, right?"
  • "I really respect my preacher. If he says there's a God, there's a God."
  • "I just believe, okay?"

Happy SmileThe world's perspective of a Christian is often upside down. They see Christians as lemmings, mindlessly following some flowery-talking preacher. They see Christians as slaves to their religion who cannot enjoy life's pleasures. But they don't understand the real JOY in serving our great God!

David understood this joy. He used several words and phrases in Psalm 16 in ways which make me stop and take notice. For instance, consider verse 2:

2 I said to the LORD, "You are my Lord; I have no good beside You."

I expected to read, "I have no GOD beside You," but he wrote, " Read More »
